First off I would like to say to those of you out there who enjoy the outdoors and the benefits of harvesting specific species, know the rules and follow them to the T! In my case I followed the rules but had someone on my vessel who missed 1 fish out of many that were harvested during our outing in the keys.

The law enforcement in the keys is very strict and also very young!! This type of combination cost me a lot of trouble due to FWC not following correct blue lighting and environmental checking procedures. Make no mistake I had a fish that was short. It was purely an accident as we had many SPEARFISHER’s in the water and lots of fish being retrieved and measured.

Once I had been unjustifiably pulled over and checked I had many obstacles to face once the officers finished doing every check in the book, plus taking me off my boat onto theirs for more of the same questioning and a sobriety test even though it was clear I had not been drinking.

Once given my citation and asked if I understood, I made a simple question inquiring about my other options and it was followed with a quick and enthusiastic comment of we can take you to Monroe County jail and you can wait to see the judge however long that will take. Wow! I thought that’s pretty harsh considering I followed all directions and was polite the entire time they had me pulled over.

I chose to sign and take my citation. After this is when I found out about Drew and his law practice that specializes in marine and maritime law. Drew was there every step of the way explaining how things worked what the next step was and how we would navigate the steps. There is always full transparency with Drew no hidden fees or timed phone charges for calls or texts you may have some additional questions about your case. He and his team reviewed all of the multiple body cam footage and compiled it against my deposition. In the end, I received money back because we settled with a very generous offer due to Drew finding that there were justifiable discrepancy's found that the officers violated.

Drew has worked for years with prosecutors and judges that reside in the lower Keys. Going it alone to represent yourself is something I would highly advise against! The courts like to make examples of people who don’t abide by the law no matter how small the infraction is even if it was a mistake. There are unforeseen forces and situations you can get into very quickly without a lawyer!

Some things to remember are you are on camera (FWC) has body cams rolling from the time they blue light you. Make sure you understand why they pulled you over especially if you are on plane and have everything stowed and they come out of the blue. Environmental checks have rules of engagement and they are not followed the majority of the time. If you get a citation I make sure you call Drew Sandow immediately, you won’t regret having his expertise and experience on your side!
