I recently went through family court for custody of my son. His father had a serious history—past charges involving alcohol, a DUI that involved the death of someone. Yet, somehow, he was still granted nearly 50/50 visitation.

The mediation process was exhausting. It ran non-stop from 8 AM to 3 or 4 PM with no lunch or breaks. By the end, everyone was visibly irritated. I was so mentally drained and frustrated that I ended up agreeing to everything just to get it over with. In hindsight, I shouldn’t have. When I reviewed the final order, I realized only two of my requests had been included. Worse, some terms were changed without my knowledge—things I never agreed to, and I only discovered them after signing.

Since the order was finalized, the father has gone back to drinking heavily. He even kneed my son in the face and violated the parenting schedule by taking my Easter holiday. He’s a high-conflict parent, but nothing in the order accounts for that or provides protections.

I also had deep concerns about my lawyer throughout the process. I needed someone assertive and truly understanding of my situation—ideally a female attorney. I honestly feel like my lawyer didn’t care about me or my child. I hired legal representation because I didn’t understand the process, but I still ended up feeling lost, unsupported, and heartbroken.
