I had an extremely difficult, long drawn out custody case that was getting nowhere. My previous lawyer (from another well known law firm in Bloomsburg) seemed apathetic to everything happening. To her, I was just a number, not a human being, and was talked down to way too many times to count.

After my son's mother left the state with him illegally, I called Hummel, Lewis & Smith on a whim, looking for an aggressive lawyer. I ended up having a very nice, honest conversation with Mike Smith. Mike took our case head on. He was honest, loyal, fair, and best of all, he was willing to talk to me like a person, not some random client, who happened to be paying a lot of money. He accepted me for who I am, past and present, stressed out, upset, mouthy, and angry at the system (beyond angry by this time).

Within the next 6 months after hiring Mike Smith, my son was back in the state, mother held accountable. Less than a year after that, I received full custody, and my son is now thriving. It was, by all accounts, an impossible outcome to a very complicated case. Mike never gave up, never let my emotions cloud the long term goals, was the first to tell me when I was being unreasonable, and he poured hours into exceeding my expectations when I needed it most. I think what I appreciate most, is that I could feel that he was emotionally invested in the outcome. My wife could see it, and our children could see it. He wore his heart on his sleeve with us when he needed to, and was a consistent, persistent force in court. I continue to be able to have conversations with Mike Smith, even after my case was won.
